Before he became a famous and wealthy editor of Ladies’ Home Journal, Edward Bok was just another depression-era kid trying to scrape together some money for his ill mother.

He was standing outside of a bakery, watching as the baker put cakes and cookies in the window display.

The baker asked young Edward, “Don’t they look good?”

Edward replied, “They would if your window was cleaner.”

The baker paused for a moment and then hired Edward on the spot to clean the windows.

Edward got the job because he delivered the right story — a story that inspired the baker to act.

Bakers don’t hire you because they want clean windows. Bakers hire you because they’re tired of watching people stroll past the window without coming in. Because they want to sell more cakes.

Why do prospects hire you?
